Hey I'm kinda thinking of taking arts for college. I'm not really sure about my skills and I can't say that my family is excited at my decision. Any tips? – from Anonymous

Oh anon, let me tell you, I was there 3 years ago.

I’ve got a high school degree in science & maths. So I barely had any artistic background. So I was scared that with my lack of artistic skill (and knowledge) I wasn’t going to make it into graphic design. But for some reason I got through the entry exam, because they saw I was motivated and very willing to learn more as I progress. So yeah, I do have several tips to give you:

1. Don’t doubt yourself too much. If you’re passionate about the course you’ve chosen and you’ve been wanting to do this for for long, nothing should stop you from getting there. In your first year you’ll definitely be struggling a lot, not sure whether you’ve really chosen the right path. But it’s really about carving out your own path that accommodate to your interests. You’ll eventually find your comfort zone and you’ll be happy about it. Don’t run from yourself either. Being open with yourself and your interests will always open news ways to explore your artistic abilities.

2. Don’t worry about skills. At least where I’m from, they’re not looking for people who already have the set of skills they want, rather, they’re looking for people who are willing to learn these skills and have plenty of ideas and inspiration. Art school mainly looks for people who have the potential to give their ideas shape, even if they’re not technically skilled. What really matters is imagination, and an innovative mind. Always being up to experiment and discover new techniques and styles.

3. Let yourself get inspired. There are so many artists and designers out there in the open, you just haven’t heard of them yet. Google Images is a start, but I definitely suggest just going to your nearest art-library, and opening up art & design magazines. Start out with making a Pinterest where you look up and save whatever. Trust me, making Pinterest-boards is super handy if you’re looking for instant visual content you can let yourself get inspired by for future projects. It does a lot more than you think. Via pinterest you can also discover more artists and designers (if the images are sourced correctly) and like that you can dive deeper into the sector you’re interested in. (Here’s one of my boards for an example). So yeah, knowledge really brings you far :)
